Take it for what it is, a fun character song that is absolutely meant to be silly. Be warned! If you take it too seriously, you won’t enjoy it. Let’s get you started with the opening number, Good Morning Baltimore. The show/movie may touch on some serious issues of racism and whatnot ( I Know Where I’ve Been, etc.), but at the end of the day it’s all about fun. It sounds sort of convoluted and heavy-handed on paper (or a screen), but that’s the thing – it’s about as tongue-in-cheek as you can get. More on that later.Īs for the plot, ‘Hairspray’ is a musical that compares discrimination against fat people to discrimination against black people (ten minutes of pondering, and that’s the best one-sentence summary I could come up with). You know how every single song from the 1950’s sounded like the same 12-bar blues? ‘Hairspray”s score has all the swinginess of that, but none of the repetitiveness. Hairspray – Original Motion Picture SoundtrackĪh yes, another musical, one that is definitely among my personal favourites. ‘Hairspray’ takes place in the late 50’s (well, like… 1960 on the dot, I guess), and the score emulates the bluesy rock and roll tunes of that era, only less boring.
